About You

You are a seasoned current or former field engineering practitioner, or platform SRE, bringing in-depth technical expertise in Kubernetes platforms. You are hands-on with deploying and running Kubernetes in Production and onboarding highly distributed and scalable stateful and stateless applications on Kubernetes. You have worked long enough with Kubernetes to realize that though customers are keen to embrace Kubernetes, they struggle. You now want to be the technical solution architect who is passionate about helping customers succeed with Kubernetes, Pilot to Production.

The Team

The Platform Services Engineering team of which you will be a part of is a compact, niche APJ level Professional Services team which works across the pre-sales and post-sales continuum. This team will spend half of its time tactically solutioning and in conversation with key executives at must win / must retain customers in coloration with Software and Services Sales teams. Remaining time is spent on proactively to test and incubate “latest solutions”, and to enable internal delivery teams to use them. The team also supports the delivery team during the execution of critical engagements. This team provides thought leadership in Kubernetes Platform adoption to both internal and customer stakeholders.

What You'll Be Doing

During pre-sales, the Kubernetes Platform Architect – Platform Services Engineering will collaborate with the software sales and services sales teams. You are expected to be the Kubernetes expert in the room who can translate ambiguous business or technical objectives into services solutions which deliver tangible outcomes for the customer. You will be responsible for shaping the requirements for platform services, and for scoping the services solution related to running, managing, and observing the Kubernetes Platform. You will also lead application onboarding discovery workshop for the target ready-for-deployment applications identified for onboarding on the Tanzu Kubernetes platform, based on which you will determine the application onboarding service scope.

Post-sale, you will support the services delivery team on need basis for critical and/or complex engagements. Typical areas where your support may be needed include leading design workshop, application onboarding on to Tanzu Kubernetes, and leading the production readiness heath check of the Kubernetes platform.


  • Working in partnership with the sales teams, lead the pre-sales engagement with customers to understand desired customer outcomes, technical objectives, and services requirements
  • Lead discovery workshops with customers to understand their business and technical drivers including application onboarding discovery of deployment-ready application workloads targeted for deployment in Kubernetes.
  • Think past individual products and to design high level end-to-end solutions with Tanzu Kubernetes to meet the business outcomes and IT objectives, create end to end solutions to meet the business outcomes
  • Craft compelling services proposals and effectively communicate the proposed services architecture to the customer, partners and project teams to demonstrate its tangible value
  • Ensure that proposals, solution designs and Statements Of Work are technically sound, competitive and representative of market leadership in the application of Kubernetes Platform technology to addressing business outcomes
  • Define role-based Level of Effort required to deliver the solution in line with VMware best practice and in collaboration with delivery leadership
  • Lead Kubernetes Platform Services Design Workshops to support the delivery team on critical or complex engagements
  • Support delivery team for application onboarding onto Tanzu Kubernetes
  • Provide leadership to help customers adopt and operationalize Tanzu Kubernetes in Production
  • Proactively test and incubate “latest solutions”, create delivery assets and enable internal delivery teams to use them
  • Promote the adoption of automation techniques and ‘as code' best practices to manage Tanzu Kubernetes in production.
  • Support a culture of learning and sharing by contributing to our technical content library to amplify and re-use architecture patterns and solution assets for common customer use cases.
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with a remote and distributed team

Required Skills & Experience

  • 6-8+ years' success in delivery consulting or engineering roles, with responsibility for architecture, design and implementation of platforms for running distributed applications on private or public cloud infrastructure
  • 2+ years of practical hands-on consulting experience in delivering Kubernetes projects (OR) as Kubernetes Platform SRE, enabling successful run, manage, observe of Kubernetes in Production.
  • Practical hands-on experience in deploying stateful and stateless workloads on Kubernetes
  • Strong practical proficiency in Linux (Administration skills highly valued)
  • Ability to confidently lead executive presentations, and facilitate key meetings and workshops, using tools and practices to help understand a problem space and lead senior-level stakeholders toward potential solutions
  • An active listener with excellent communications and interpersonal skills, with an ability to utilizes different styles of questioning techniques and manage conflict and objection handling
  • Polished communication skills; able to explain complex topics using simple words
  • Understanding of the latest cloud trends and best practices, including Cloud-Native Architecture and Patterns, DevOps and infrastructure-as-code/GitOps principles
  • Proven competence to learn fast and educate others on rapidly changing technology across software engineering of modern applications, automation, and operations
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 50% (post pandemic travel restrictions)

Prefered or Helpful Skills & Experience

  • Pre-sales Consulting experience, including time supporting sales and liaising with technical practices and delivery. Alternatively, experience in the enterprise, interfacing between IT and platform users
  • Experience with cloud service provider offerings like Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • The ideal candidate will have familiarity with virtualization technologies such as Hyper-V, vSphere, and vCenter, software defined networking and software defined storage
  • Participate and contribute to broader Open Source and Modern Applications ecosystem, Kubernetes SIG's, CNCF practice communities.
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS) certifications.
